Allard Pierson Museum in Amsterdam Announces 2025 Research Fellows
The Allard Pierson Museum in Amsterdam has revealed the selection of its 2025 research fellows, a group of scholars dedicated to exploring various facets of the museum's extensive collections. This initiative underscores the museum's commitment to advancing academic inquiry and enriching understanding across archaeology, ancient worlds, and cultural history.
Ten fellowships have been awarded, supporting diverse research projects that delve into specific collections housed at the Allard Pierson. These studies aim to uncover new insights, reconstruct historical narratives, and contribute to scholarly discourse.
The research topics are broad, ranging from biographical studies of scientists within the Artis Library to explorations of 17th-century communication within the Mennonite community. Other projects include critical provenance research focused on illicit trade in archaeological objects, investigations into 19th-century spectacular culture found in circus collections, and studies on the transmission of meaning in alchemical texts. Scholars are also examining the working papers of historical figures, the emotional content of 18th-century poetry, and the history of vegetable gardening through Dutch manuals. Further art historical studies of 18th-century prints and detailed examinations of the acquisition history of Greek papyri are also part of the program. One fellow will specifically research Karel Holle’s ‘Sketch Language Maps’ of Indonesia from 1882-1894 within the cartography collection.
More comprehensive details, including abstracts for each of the selected research projects, can be found on the museum’s website here.
