Allard Pierson Museum in Amsterdam to Preserve Amsterdam's DIY Music Heritage with Carcassettes Archive
The Allard Pierson Museum, a prominent cultural institution in Amsterdam, is set to become the custodian of a significant piece of local music history. The archives and entire catalog of Carcassettes, an influential independent music label originating from Amsterdam's 1990s DIY culture, will be integrated into the museum's extensive music collection. This initiative marks a collaboration in anticipation of Carcassettes' 30th anniversary in 2026, promising public access to nearly four decades of unique sound recordings. The official transfer of the Carcassettes collection to the Allard Pierson is scheduled for April 2, 2025.
The Carcassettes Legacy: A Glimpse into Amsterdam's 90s Music Scene
Founded in 1996 by Hans Bos, Carcassettes emerged from a vibrant period for independent music. Between 1996 and 2011, the label released 39 distinct cassette tapes, each in limited runs of 50 to 100 copies. It operated as a collective, offering complete creative freedom to musicians from various notable Dutch bands, including Hallo Venray, Daryll-Ann, Scram C Baby, Fatal Flowers, Treble Spankers, and Bingo Trappers. Artists were responsible for both the musical content and the visual design of their releases, fostering a unique DIY haven within the music industry, supported by live performances across Amsterdam. The label's distinctive approach saw releases in batches of four, reflecting its experimental and artist-driven ethos.
Preservation and Future Access for Music Enthusiasts
This collaboration between Carcassettes, the Allard Pierson, and Excelsior Recordings, supported by Podiumkunst.net, aims to safeguard and share this musical heritage. The Allard Pierson, known for its extensive music and audio collection and its professional digitization studio, will undertake the crucial task of digitalizing all audio recordings from the Carcassettes archives. Audio producer Casper van der Lans will handle the remastering process. Following digitalization, a dedicated website will be launched to host the music, and Excelsior Recordings will ensure wider availability across various listening platforms.
Celebrating 30 Years: Exhibitions and Events in 2026
The 30th anniversary of Carcassettes in 2026 will be celebrated with a series of public events. Plans include a special exhibition at the Allard Pierson Museum, a series of concerts featuring artists connected to the label, and the official presentation of the new Carcassettes website. Additionally, a significant milestone will be reached with the release of the 40th Carcassette, curated by Franti Maresova (known for work with Personal Trainer), marking a continuation of the label's legacy.
Visitor Information: Temporary Section Closure
Visitors to the Allard Pierson Museum should note that a section of the Romans exhibition will be temporarily closed until Friday, March 13, due to ongoing renovation work.
