Allard Pierson Museum in Amsterdam Champions Research with J.M. van Winter Stipend
The Allard Pierson Museum, a prominent cultural institution in Amsterdam, has highlighted a significant academic initiative: the Professor J.M. van Winter Stipend. This annual stipend supports research focused on the rich history of eating and drinking, specifically utilizing the museum's extensive History of Food collection.
Established to honor Professor J.M. van Winter, an emeritus professor of Medieval History renowned for her contributions to the study of food history, the stipend encourages scholarly engagement with unique historical materials. It also aims to promote the valuable History of Food collection, part of the Special Collections of the University of Amsterdam, which is housed within the Allard Pierson.
Exploring Culinary History at Allard Pierson
The History of Food collection at the Allard Pierson is a key resource for understanding culinary traditions through the ages. The Stichting Gastronomische Bibliotheek, founded in 1993 by Johannes van Dam, Joop Witteveen, and Bart Cuperus, played a pivotal role in preserving these private collections for future generations, ultimately bringing them under the umbrella of the University of Amsterdam's Special Collections in 2005.
The €1000 stipend provides financial assistance for travel, accommodation, and research costs, and must be utilized within one year. Researchers are expected to present their findings in a brief written report and share their insights at a future Amsterdam Symposium on the History of Food.
Supporting Academic Research in Amsterdam
The stipend invited applications from students and researchers affiliated with universities in the Netherlands or abroad. Interested candidates were asked to submit a research proposal, a brief CV, and a completed application form. The application deadline for the most recently announced stipend was August 15, 2021.
A jury, including Professor J.M. van Winter and members of the Joop Witteveen Prize committee, was responsible for assessing the applications. The recipient of the Professor J.M. van Winter Stipend for that cycle was announced on Friday, February 11, 2022, during the Amsterdam Symposium on the History of Food. All applicants were contacted before January 1, 2022.
This initiative underscores the Allard Pierson Museum's commitment to advancing scholarship and making its invaluable collections accessible for academic exploration.
