Amsterdam Centre for Architecture (ARCAM) Leads Dialogue on Future Spatial Design in the Amsterdam Region
The Amsterdam Centre for Architecture (ARCAM) is playing a pivotal role in the "Actieprogramma Ruimtelijk Ontwerp" (Action Programme Spatial Design), a nationwide initiative aimed at fostering public dialogue around crucial spatial development research. As a coordinator for the Noordwest Nederland region, which includes North Holland, Flevoland, and Utrecht, ARCAM is at the forefront of translating complex design studies into accessible community conversations.
This program, launched in 2025, is spearheaded by CoLa (Stichting Coördinatie Lokale Architectuurinitiatieven). CoLa's mission is to organize a societal dialogue across the Netherlands, utilizing existing design research commissioned by the Dutch government. This aligns with Action Line 4 of the Actieprogramma Ruimtelijk Ontwerp 2025, which focuses on collecting, interpreting, and applying knowledge from design research to the broader spatial planning field.
ARCAM's Role in Shaping Regional Spatial Debates in Noordwest Nederland
ARCAM, in collaboration with ABC Architectuurcentrum Haarlem, coordinates activities for the Noordwest Nederland region. This area encompasses significant economic and logistical hubs like TATA Steel, the Westelijk Havengebied, Schiphol, and Utrecht. It faces pressing challenges related to employment, housing, accessibility, and liveability, alongside major tasks in nature development, water management, and the energy transition.
A central theme for the Noordwest region's dialogue is "Geopolitics and other spatial challenges," specifically addressing the increasing land claims by Defence. This introduces a new layer of complexity, as Defence operations bring acute interests and different decision-making processes, where transparency and public participation may not be primary considerations. The initiative aims to explore how these Defence-related space claims can be integrated with and potentially enhance other regional development goals.
ARCAM and its partners are organizing a series of five public meetings and workshops. These sessions will investigate how Defence space claims can accelerate, improve, and integrate with other spatial demands. Each gathering will feature select design research projects to inspire and guide discussions on these spatial issues. Information collected during these events will contribute to a speculative map titled "Space for Defence is more Space for Quality."

- October 27, 2025: A closed meeting focusing on the Amersfoort to Zeist area, organized by Fasade Amersfoorts forum voor architectuur, stedenbouw en landschap.
- November 19, 2025: "Geopolitics in the Metropolis," organized by Arcam, featuring design research from Rademacher de Vries and De Zwarte Hond.
- December 8, 2025: "Design Research Examined More Closely," organized by Architectuurcentrum ABC Haarlem.
- December 2025 / January 2026: A dedicated meeting in Flevoland (details to follow).
- January 28, 2026: The closing event, "Geopolitics in the Metropolis," focusing on local emergency support points, organized by Aorta.
