Historic ARTIS Aquarium Reopens in Amsterdam After Major Transformation
The celebrated ARTIS Aquarium, a significant part of ARTIS Amsterdam Royal Zoo, has officially welcomed visitors again on June 13, 2026. This reopening follows an extensive five-year period of restoration and reinvention. Originally established in 1882, the landmark now offers a modern, immersive experience dedicated to the critical role of water for all life on Earth.
A Revitalized Underwater Journey in Amsterdam
Visitors entering the reimagined Aquarium will discover diverse aquatic environments, where monumental heritage converges with vibrant living animals and plants, interactive installations, scientific insights, and artistic elements. The exhibits showcase the intricate connections of all living things through water, featuring a variety of species from nurse sharks and pistol shrimp to tree frogs.
Rembrandt Sutorius, Director of ARTIS, highlighted the profound message behind the project. "For five years, we have worked on both the restoration and reinvention of the Aquarium," he noted. "The new Aquarium tells what may be one of the most important nature stories of our time: without healthy water, there is no life." This transformation aims to inspire visitors to reflect on water's far-reaching impact, from vast oceans to urban waterways and even the water used daily, encouraging a fresh perspective on water and humanity's place within the natural world.
Preserving a Legacy of Aquatic Engineering
Beyond its new narrative, the ARTIS Aquarium also stands as a unique example of living industrial heritage. Upon its original opening in 1882, the innovative water filtration system, designed by British aquarist William Alford Lloyd, was internationally recognized as an engineering marvel. This pioneering system made the maintenance of large-scale saltwater aquariums possible in the 19th century.
During the recent restoration efforts, this historic Lloyd system was meticulously preserved, refurbished, and integrated with contemporary technology. Today, ARTIS proudly hosts the world's last functioning Lloyd filtration system, safeguarding a rare and operational piece of international industrial and scientific history.
ARTIS: A Hub for Nature, Culture, and Science
The reopening of the Aquarium represents another important milestone in the ongoing evolution of ARTIS Amsterdam Royal Zoo. As one of the world's oldest zoos, ARTIS consistently transforms itself into a multidisciplinary center focused on nature, culture, and science. This broader vision is also evident in its acclaimed ARTIS-Micropia, a museum dedicated to microbes, and the interactive ARTIS-Groote Museum, which explores humanity's relationship with nature. The new Aquarium reinforces ARTIS's commitment to innovating how diverse audiences engage with the natural world in the 21st century.
