In his ongoing project Before Freedom, which began in 2022, Adam Rouhana counters the often reductive depictions of Palestinian life in international news. Rather than focusing solely on scenes of conflict and hardship, Rouhana documents the quiet, everyday moments that unfold across historic areas like Jerusalem, Hebron, Bethlehem, Jericho, and Haifa.
His photographs capture simple, intimate acts of existence: children playing in sunlit alleys, friends gathering before a soccer match, and families sharing meals. Through these quiet tableaux, Rouhana provides an alternative visual narrative where his subjects reclaim their own representation and assert their humanity. Everyday symbols, such as a watermelon slice referencing historic bans on the Palestinian flag, connect these ordinary moments to a broader heritage of cultural resistance.
Rouhana, who splits his time between Jerusalem and London and currently serves as a Jameel Fellow at the Victoria & Albert Museum, brings a highly deliberate and reflective approach to his craft. Using natural lighting and careful framing, his camera serves as an active witness to resilient communities carving out joy and connection amidst structural constraints.
