Contemporary Photography in Amsterdam: Alvin Ng’s Mythic Narrative at Foam
The 17th edition of the biannual Foam Talent initiative introduces a fresh cohort of international image-makers whose work addresses profound contemporary questions. Amid shifting global landscapes and personal displacements, the selected artists explore themes of origin, connection, and belonging. Among these voices is Singaporean photographer Alvin Ng, whose project, Book of Days, brings an archaeological sensitivity to the medium of photography at Foam Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam.
Merging Antiquity and Image-Making
Ng's work centers on the fluidity of time, tracing the delicate connections between the past, present, and future. Book of Days draws its title and thematic structure from Fasti, an ancient calendar poem composed in AD 8 by the classical Roman poet Ovid.
Deeply influenced by mythology, philosophy, and classical texts, Ng translates his childhood fascination with archaeology into visual art. By looking backward to ancient narratives, his photography seeks to capture a universal, interconnected experience of existence.
Tactile Artistry and Mythological Themes
Visitors engaging with Ng's work will notice a distinctively tactile approach to the photographic print. Rather than relying solely on digital capture, Ng hand-manipulates his prints. He physically punches holes through the paper to manipulate light and layers natural objects directly onto the images before re-photographing them.
This process results in dreamlike, ethereal images that carry titles representing Roman deities, such as Luna, Jupiter, and Faunus. Each piece is paired with poetic verses from Ovid, creating a dialogue between modern visual art and classical literature.
