Queer Representation and Trans History: Foam and Pride Photo Present Históricas in Amsterdam
In celebration of World Pride, Amsterdam's premier photography museum, Foam, has teamed up with the local non-profit Pride Photo to showcase Históricas. This presentation highlights the creative work of artists expanding the boundaries of LGBTQIA+ representation through powerful visual storytelling.
Históricas centers on the lives of Marcela, Teté, Mychel, Sonia, and Mónica, who are members of the Archivo de la Memoria Trans Argentina (Trans Memory Archive of Argentina). This collaborative project serves as both an artistic showcase and an act of historical preservation.
Experiencing Trans History Through the Lens of Holc & Villalobos
The project is a joint creation by visual artists Mauricio Holc & Hector Villalobos. By blending contemporary portraiture with archival materials, they celebrate trans women—referred to historically as travesti in Latin America—not merely as observers of past events, but as active creators of their own history.
The artists present these women as a living archive. Their collective memory has been forged through decades of marginalization, survival, and persistent resistance.
- Mauricio Holc is an Argentine queer artist specializing in analogue photography, portraiture, and fashion to explore themes of identity and community.
- Hector Villalobos (also working under the name La Variante Chola) is a Peruvian creative director and photographer based in Buenos Aires, whose work focuses on dissident and marginalized bodies.
The subjects of their portraits belong to an archive founded in exile in 2012 by activist María Belén Correa. Today, this archive protects more than 15,000 historical documents, photographs, and records detailing trans life in Argentina dating back to the early 20th century.
