Stadsarchief Amsterdam Enhances Digital Search for the City's Historical Records
Stadsarchief Amsterdam, the city's repository for historical documents, has introduced significant updates to its online search system. These improvements are a direct result of user feedback and are designed to enhance how visitors explore and access the extensive collections of Amsterdam's past. The changes aim to make the archive more intuitive and efficient for both seasoned researchers and curious history enthusiasts.
Enhanced Navigation for Archival Collections in Amsterdam
Many users expressed a desire for a clearer overview when navigating the archive, particularly those familiar with traditional hierarchical structures. To address this, a new feature provides an organized view of related records directly from any detail page. By clicking on an icon or term under "Gekoppelde records" (Linked records) at the bottom of a detail page, users can now open a slide-in screen. This view presents a comprehensive overview of associated Groups, Bestanddelen (Components), Akten (Deeds), or Afbeeldingen (Images), or even all linked items regardless of their specific type.
This updated functionality streamlines the research process, allowing users to browse connected items without repeatedly returning to search results. For those who wish to conduct more detailed investigations, an option to "Bekijk in zoekoverzicht" (View in search overview) remains available, directing them to the full search screen for advanced filtering and sorting.
Richer Details in Search Results
When exploring the entire archive, the volume of potential results can be substantial. To help users quickly assess the relevance of their findings, additional information has been integrated into the slide-in view of the results overview. For items classified as Bestanddelen and Groepen, the system now displays the relevant Archiefblok (Archive Block) and any associated Groepen. This immediate context helps visitors determine if a record is pertinent to their research without needing to leave the search results list, contributing to a more efficient discovery process.
Continuous Development Based on Visitor Input
User feedback has affirmed the value of the archive's comprehensive "search everything" feature, which has enabled many to uncover new historical information. Simultaneously, users have requested more sophisticated filtering and search options. In response, Stadsarchief Amsterdam has already implemented new functionalities, including the ability to sort by 'Type' and filter by 'Archief'.
Further enhancements, such as additional search capabilities and brief explanations for each record 'Type', are planned for future updates. These incremental improvements are part of the ongoing development of the beta.archief.amsterdam platform. The institution encourages visitors to continue testing these new features and to share their findings and suggestions via the provided online feedback form. Regular updates on these changes can be found on their Stand van zaken page.
Stadsarchief Amsterdam remains a crucial resource for understanding the city's rich history, and these digital advancements further strengthen its mission of accessibility.
