Curatorial context

This exhibition provides an immersive experience of daily life in the 17th century, a period of significant contrasts, featuring people from all walks of life, from the wealthy to the poor, migrants to merchants. Through a collection of everyday objects, visitors gain insight into the diverse lifestyles and homes of the era. Highlights include household items, a fireplace designed by Philip Vingboons, a silk stays and busk from the V&A Museum, and the Rijksmuseum's famed doll’s houses commissioned by Petronella Oortman and Petronella Dunois. Designed by theatre practitioner and visual artist Steef de Jong, the exhibition uses cardboard to create nine diorama-style displays that transport visitors through various domestic scenes at different times of the day. The exhibition aims to show how close and yet how far the 17th century is from our own time, by exploring common human experiences like combining work and domestic life, and by highlighting differences in choices regarding health, interior design, and household labor. The doll's house of Petronella Oortman, a centerpiece of the exhibition, has been fully digitized for an interactive online experience.
