Curatorial context
This immersive exhibition at Fabrique des Lumières transports visitors to the 17th century, the Golden Age of Dutch painting. It highlights the works of masters such as Vermeer and Rembrandt, capturing the essence of Dutch society through scenes of daily life, faith, and enchanting landscapes. Over 325 artworks by approximately 50 different painters are featured, allowing visitors to explore the reality of ordinary life represented in extraordinary ways. The exhibition delves into Vermeer's intimate city scenes and portraits, and Rembrandt's mastery of chiaroscuro and biblical themes, culminating in the powerful 'Night Watch'. It also features works by Abraham Blommaert, Hendrick Avercamp, Hendrick Cornelisz Vroom, and Jan Steen.
Transitioning from the Dutch Masters, the exhibition also pays tribute to Vincent van Gogh, a worthy heir to the 17th-century tradition. His use of bright colors and intense emotion is showcased through his landscapes, self-portraits, and still lifes, moving from the sun-drenched Midi to a dreamlike 'Starry Night'. The exhibition is approximately 34 minutes long and is followed by a short exhibition on Mondriaan, 'An Abundance of Colour'.
