Curatorial context

The Mirror Floor Installation invites visitors to step directly into an enchanting optical experience within the Grachtenmuseum's monumental Andriessen Room. By covering the floor with mirrors, the installation triggers a dizzying interplay of reflections between the room's original 18th-century landscape paintings by Jurriaan Andriessen and the contemporary 'Dream of harmony' (2022) ceiling mural by French artist Pascal Amblard. This juxtaposition creates a unique spatial experience where historical architecture and modern art collide, offering visitors a chance to view the space from an entirely new perspective. Visitors are encouraged to don special slippers to walk across the mirrored surface, fully immersing themselves in the reflected environment. An accompanying audio guide, narrated by Faye Feller, provides deeper insight into the history and artistry of the room's decorative elements, enhancing the contemplative nature of the space. This project, which bridges different centuries of artistic expression, was realized with the support of the Zabawas Fund.
