Curatorial context

Adolphe de Meyer: The Substance of a Venetian Dream offers an exceptional glimpse into the personal and artistic world of Adolphe de Meyer, a ground-breaking figure in pictorialist photography and fashion. The exhibition centres on a remarkable 2019 discovery in the municipal library of Tours: a series of 75 photographs capturing his life and work in Venice. These images are displayed in their entirety for the first time, providing a narrative thread through eight thematic sections that cover his career, his sophisticated interior design, and his personal relationships. Central to the exhibition is the role of the Palazzo Balbi-Valier, which De Meyer transformed into a vibrant cultural hub. Through these images, the exhibition examines his aesthetic influence, his experimental techniques in lighting and staging, and his profound connection with his wife and muse, Olga de Meyer. Curated by art historian Camille Mona Paysant, the exhibition provides rare insight into a man who turned his entire life into a coherent work of art, reinventing his surroundings and himself in the process.
