Exhibition summary

This exhibition at Museum Het Schip celebrates the history of its unique 1920s post office, designed by Michel de Klerk. It highlights the building's significance as the only original post office from that era still in existence in the Netherlands.

Curatorial context

Since September 2020, Museum Het Schip has been showcasing the architectural treasure of its collection: the former post office designed by Michel de Klerk. This building stands as a significant historical monument, notably being the sole original 1920s post office in the Netherlands that remains intact. Its construction coincided with a period when the Dutch PTT and the Rijks Post Spaarbank placed considerable emphasis on innovative design. After the postal service vacated the building at the close of 1999, it became integrated into Museum Het Schip. The removal of the PTT's characteristic grass-green paint revealed the underlying original blue-grey linseed oil paint. Following three years of extensive restoration, the space has been reopened to the public. The exhibition delves into the fascinating history of the post office, featuring original drawings by Michel de Klerk, serving as a teaser for the permanent exhibition of the post office.

Admission and ticket notes

The exhibition can be visited by joining the daily guided tours organized by Museum Het Schip. Additionally, two expanded guided tours, 'Treasures of social housing' and 'Michel de Klerk', offer further exploration of the post office space.
