The exhibition 'Perfect Day. Mounir Raji Photographs Tourism' presents a commissioned series by photographer Mounir Raji, exploring the ultimate tourist experience: the cruise. Raji traveled to Florida and boarded an eight-day cruise in the Caribbean, seeking the opposite of his own less structured holidays to understand the 'mechanisms of tourism.' His resulting photographs, numbering around 50, capture the meticulously designed environment of a cruise ship, which brings together entertainment, relaxation, security, and comfort, aiming for a 'perfect day' for its passengers. The series invites reflection on whether tourists are aware of the crew, the environmental impact, or the local populations affected by this industry. Mounir Raji, born in 1982, is known for the warmth and realism in his photography. His commercial work is complemented by series exhibited at Kunstmuseum Den Haag and elsewhere. For Document Nederland 2023, he intentionally chose a subject that contrasted with his own travel experiences of visiting family without a set plan, seeking instead the highly structured and escapist environment of a cruise. The exhibition is part of the Document Nederland series, which commissions Dutch photographers to capture topical social themes.
