Exhibition summary

This exhibition delves into the story behind the monumental world and night sky maps in the Royal Palace Amsterdam's Citizens' Hall. It showcases stunning maps and atlases from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, highlighting Amsterdam's historical role as a leading cartography center.

Curatorial context

The Citizens' Hall of the Royal Palace Amsterdam features three astonishingly large maps of the world and the night sky, each measuring 624 centimeters in diameter. These maps are a fundamental part of the design by architect Jacob van Campen and remain the largest maps ever created. This historical significance is rooted in Amsterdam's position as the world's foremost cartography center during the 17th and 18th centuries, a period when ambitious cartographers produced an immense volume of maps and atlases that brought global knowledge to the public. The 'Universe' exhibition, produced in partnership with Allard Pierson│ The Collections of the University of Amsterdam, illuminates the narrative behind these floor maps and presents a collection of the most beautiful maps and atlases from these influential centuries, underscoring the city's rich cartographic heritage.
