Robert Rauschenberg Exhibition: Early Works from the Cy Twombly Foundation in New York

Gagosian presents an exhibition of six important early works by Robert Rauschenberg, drawn from the collection of the Cy Twombly Foundation. These pieces mark significant milestones in Rauschenberg’s early artistic development, reflecting the profound friendship and ongoing exchange of ideas that characterized his relationship with Cy Twombly after they met in 1951 at the Art Students League of New York. The exhibition is timed to coincide with the gallery's centennial celebrations for Rauschenberg and opens alongside an inaugural presentation of works by Marcel Duchamp in the gallery’s new space at 980 Madison Avenue. The featured selection includes rare early sculptures and notable collaborative projects, such as a life-size cyanotype blueprint created with Susan Weil. Many of these works were preserved by Twombly following a period where much of Rauschenberg's output from 1950–1951 was lost or repurposed. Through these assemblages and experiments, the exhibition provides intimate insight into a foundational moment in post-war American art, underscoring the collaborative spirit and material experimentation that defined both artists' early careers.
