Exhibition summary

This exhibition by Amaia Gracia Azqueta is a site-specific installation that explores themes of temporality, memory, and the plasticity of sculpture. Drawing inspiration from classical Greco-Roman, Renaissance, and Baroque forms, the artist uses contemporary materials to reflect on the nature of human time and the residue of lived experience.

Curatorial context

An Expansive Occupation is a reflection on the fleeting nature of time and the remnants left behind by human existence, which the artist interprets through the lens of 'Nagori'—the residue left after an event. The installation serves as a site-specific response to the URIBITARTE40 Hall, featuring a dialogue between various mediums including small-scale domestic photography and large experimental installations constructed from polyvinyl acetate, fiberglass, and iron. The project evolves from the artist's previous research into the 'Floating Cloak' and the folds found in classical and Renaissance sculpture. By incorporating collaborative pieces with designer Miriam Ocáriz, the exhibition bridges the gap between contemporary art and fashion. Through these works, Gracia Azqueta engages with the concept of 'liquid modernity,' inviting visitors to consider the fragile, mortal nature of our current era in contrast to the historical traditions of sculpture.
