New Flemish Masterpiece on Display in Bruges Near Apotheek Sint-Janshospitaal
A major piece of Flemish heritage has arrived in Bruges. The 15th-century panel painting titled 'Scenes from the Life of Saint Joseph' has been placed on long-term loan at the Groeningemuseum. Exploring the 15th-Century Masterpiece in Bruges
Crafted by an unidentified artist from the Southern Netherlands, 'Scenes from the Life of Saint Joseph' is highly regarded for its unusual scale and narrative style. Measuring 64 by 203 centimeters, its wide landscape orientation allows the painter to tell several stories from the saint's life across a single panel.
The painting provides an important contrast to the Groeningemuseum’s world-renowned collection of local Flemish Primitives, which includes masterpieces by Jan van Eyck. Because this work originated outside of Bruges, it gives visitors a broader understanding of how painting styles developed across the Southern Netherlands during the same historic era.
Why the Artwork is Temporarily in Bruges
The panel is normally housed in Saint Catherine's Church in Hoogstraten. However, the church is currently undergoing a major structural restoration scheduled to last until 2029, meaning its artworks must be safely kept elsewhere.
Before coming to Bruges, the painting was sent to the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage (KIK) for essential conservation work and academic study. Now that the preservation process is complete, the panel will remain in the care of Musea Brugge to ensure it stays accessible to the public during the church's closure.

The painting is displayed in Room 1 of the Groeningemuseum and will remain there until January 2027. Visitors planning a trip should note that the Groeningemuseum itself is scheduled to close for its own renovations starting in 2027. After the closure, the museum's most significant works are set to be temporarily hosted at the BRUSK art gallery.
