Apotheek Sint-Janshospitaal and Musea Brugge Complete Major Art History Research Project
The preservation of heritage in Bruges spans both the history of science and the evolution of the fine arts. Musea Brugge, the cultural network that includes historic preservation sites like the Apotheek Sint-Janshospitaal, has officially concluded its extensive two-year Apprentice-Master II research project.
Running from June 2024 through May 2026, this collaborative initiative successfully mapped the international educational paths of 19th-century Bruges art students.
Uncovering the Secrets of Historical Bruges Artists and Academies
The project focused heavily on tracing the journeys of young creators who studied at the Bruges Academy during the 1800s. After completing their initial training, many of these local artists traveled across borders to refine their crafts, often settling in major European creative centers such as Rome.
Led by researcher Thijs Dekeukeleire and educational officer Marie Vandeghinste, the initiative produced significant contributions to art history, including:
- An international academic conference hosted at the Academia Belgica.
- A drawing course featuring specialized masterclasses.
- A collaborative crowdsourcing campaign organized in partnership with the Bruges City Archive (Stadsarchief Brugge).
- The digital publication of hundreds of academic drawings, now accessible on the official online collection portal.
Supported by the Flemish government, the project integrated research from several domestic and international institutions, including the RKD (Netherlands Institute for Art History), the Institut National d’Histoire de l’Art (INHA), the Royal Library of Belgium, and Ghent University.
