From Apotheek Sint-Janshospitaal to the Groeningemuseum: Historic Painting Reunion in Bruges
While exploring the historic medical heritage of the Apotheek Sint-Janshospitaal, culture enthusiasts in Bruges have a unique opportunity to witness an extraordinary international artistic reunion nearby. Musea Brugge is presenting a rare, temporary display featuring two sister paintings that have travelled across the globe to be showcased together for the first time in Belgium.
The Century-Long Journey of the Sister Panels
The two featured paintings, which depict scenes from the lives of Saint James and Saint John, originally emerged from the same workshop. Although the name of the artist and the original location of the works remain unknown, their historical trail is well-documented. In 1909, both panels were held by a London art dealer before being sold to different collectors on opposite sides of the world.
One painting was acquired by the municipal collections in Bruges, while the other was purchased by the prominent Japanese art collector Kojiro Matsukata (1866–1950), eventually finding a home in Tokyo's National Museum of Western Art (NMWA).
After more than a century apart, the masterpieces were reunited for a special exhibition in Tokyo. Following the conclusion of the Japanese event, the Tokyo panel has traveled to Belgium. Visitors can now experience this historic reunion firsthand at the Groeningemuseum from 16 June to 26 October 2026.
International Research and Restoration Efforts
This presentation is the culmination of a close, multi-year collaboration between Tokyo’s National Museum of Western Art and Musea Brugge. Since 2017, experts from both institutions have carried out extensive historical research and technical material analyses on the panels.
As part of this collaborative effort, the Bruges-owned panel, Scenes from the Life of Saint James and Saint John, underwent a meticulous restoration.
