Exhibition summary

Diante do Tempo is a collective exhibition that reflects on the passage of time within contemporary art, fostering a dialogue between different generations and contexts. Drawing inspiration from Georges Didi-Huberman’s theoretical work, the project challenges traditional linear chronologies to explore themes of history, politics, and heritage.

Curatorial context

Organized by Appleton in partnership with several prominent institutions, including the Centro de Artes Visuais (CAV) in Coimbra, Diante do Tempo is more than a standard itinerant exhibition. It functions as a dynamic series of exhibition, production, and knowledge-sharing moments that celebrate the 18th anniversary of the Appleton association. The title, derived from the seminal work of philosopher and art historian Georges Didi-Huberman, frames a curatorial approach that rejects linear histories in favor of a model that recognizes the simultaneity of disparate temporalities and contexts. The presentation at the CAV in Coimbra features works by artists including Ana Hatherly, Belén Uriel, Pedro Diniz Reis, Pedro Falcão, Sara Graça, Sara Mealha, and Susana Mendes Silva. Many of the works on display are original pieces created specifically for this project. In addition to the visual works, the Coimbra leg of the exhibition includes guided tours led by authors and artists, providing further insight into the exhibition’s intellectual focus on how art engages with past, present, and future trajectories.
