Exhibition summary

This exhibition explores the intersections of memory, absence, and artistic regeneration through the works of Caterina Sbrana and Gabriele Mallegni. By utilizing the traditional technique of plaster casting, the artists create hybrid ceramic and terracotta forms that dialogue with the museum's classical sculpture collection.

Curatorial context

A memoria di forma, curated by Pietro Gaglianò, invites visitors to encounter a unique dialogue between contemporary ceramic art and the historical plaster casts housed at the Gipsoteca di Arte Antica. Artists Caterina Sbrana and Gabriele Mallegni employ the traditional technique of 'formatura'—historically used to create plaster casts of ancient works—to investigate concepts of absence, injury, and creative renewal. By starting with the fractures and lesions found in ancient sculpture and architectural surfaces, the artists transform these marks of age into creative inspiration, resulting in an array of hybrid objects, visionary architectures, and imaginative portraits. The exhibition is designed as a series of 'curiosities' that blend artificial and natural elements, effectively challenging visitors to engage with the art as an open question. The project aims to encourage personal interpretations rooted in individual experience, fostering a space where classical forms are contaminated and revitalized by modern creative processes. The exhibition is supported by a scientific committee including Anna Anguissola and Chiara Tarantino, and is presented as a collaborative project between the Gipsoteca and the MARSIA laboratory of the University of Pisa, with contributions from local cultural partners.
