Exhibition summary

Kunsthalle Praha presents 'Exposures,' the first comprehensive exhibition on the life and work of Prague-born photographer Lucia Moholy. Spanning her entire career from the 1910s to the 1970s, the exhibition features over 600 photographs and documents, highlighting her significant but often uncredited contributions to Bauhaus photography and her work in information science.

Curatorial context

‘Exposures’ at Kunsthalle Praha is the first major retrospective dedicated to the life and work of Lucia Moholy (1894–1989), a photographer and writer whose contributions, particularly at the Bauhaus, were often overlooked. The exhibition traces her engagement with photography, the arts, publishing, and information science from the 1910s to the 1970s, showcasing over 600 photographs, microfilms, letters, and books. It places her emblematic Bauhaus photographs into dialogue with her later work as an information scientist in Turkey and a figure in the Zurich art scene, addressing missing works through installations by contemporary artist Jan Tichy. The exhibition also highlights Moholy's forced emigration due to fascism and her subsequent career in London and Turkey, including her role in information science during wartime and her later artistic contributions in Zurich. It delves into the complex history of her uncredited photographs and their eventual partial return after years of negotiation, reflecting on themes of cultural preservation, the status of photography, and the role of women in art.
