Curatorial context

William Kentridge: The Battle Between YES and NO is the first significant exhibition in Czechia dedicated to the internationally renowned artist William Kentridge. Raised in Johannesburg during apartheid, Kentridge's work is deeply shaped by social justice activism and reflects South Africa's complex history while addressing universal human concerns. Working across drawing, sculpture, performance, film, and opera, he combines traditional techniques with experimentation, drawing inspiration from biography, politics, art history, and literature to create a unique visual language rooted in imagination and ambiguity. The exhibition traces his journey from early charcoal animations to recent multidisciplinary projects, presenting his belief in complexity as a counterpoint to rigid certainty. Themes of exile, language, desire, guilt, longing, and the fragility of hope are explored, resonating with contemporary political polarization and the dangers of uncompromising beliefs. The exhibition is designed as a spatial collage, featuring early animated films from the _Drawings for Projection_ series (1989–2020) that evoke South Africa’s transition out of apartheid. It also includes theatrical works like the kinetic model _Right Into Her Arms_ (2016) and _O Sentimental Machine_ (2015), alongside the recent video installation _To Cross One More Sea_ (2024), which reflects on exile and displacement. Specific works created for Prague, such as _A Letter to Felice_ (2026), are also presented. The exhibition is accompanied by a publication, _A Natural History of the Studio_, offering insights into Kentridge's creative process, and features a multilingual audioguide created in collaboration with the Cabinet of Wonders platform. The exhibition is initiated by Kunsthalle Praha and realized in collaboration with the artist, William Kentridge Studio, and exhibition designer Squatelier.
