Curatorial context
The Müller Villa, constructed between 1928 and 1930, stands as a chef-d'oeuvre of world architectural avant-garde, designed by the renowned Adolf Loos for František Müller. While appearing austerely functionalist from the exterior, its true innovation lies in its interior spatial arrangement, the Raumplan. This concept, conceived by Loos, positions individual rooms at varying vertical levels, interconnected by staircases, creating a fluid and dynamic living space. Originally serving as the Müller family's residence, the villa was expropriated after 1948 and housed various state institutions before being acquired by the city of Prague. Recognized for its exceptional architectural value, it was declared a national cultural monument in 1995. Extensive restoration efforts, commencing in 1997 and concluding in 2000, were undertaken in collaboration with architectural professionals, earning accolades for its exemplary reconstruction.
The villa's interior comprises a rich array of spaces, including a living room with marble cladding, a mahogany dining room, a lady's boudoir with Japanese decor, a library, a study, bedrooms, bathrooms, dressing rooms, children's rooms, and a darkroom that now serves as an exhibition space dedicated to Loos's work. The surrounding garden, dating back to the 1930s and restored in 2000, has also received international recognition for its landscape design. Access to the villa requires prior reservation, with tickets available online or at a designated ticket office.
