Exhibition summary

This project, 'ATLAS (АТЛАС): Vernacular Hardcore', delves into the concept of 'emergency vernacular' architecture that emerges during times of crisis, specifically in the context of Ukraine's post-invasion reconstruction. It examines how tradition, DIY strategies, and improvisation shape the rebuilding of damaged vernacular architecture.

Curatorial context

The exhibition 'ATLAS (АТЛАС): Vernacular Hardcore' is centered around the work of architect Bogdana Kosmina, who is continuing an exceptional family legacy: the "Atlas of Traditional Ukrainian Housing" (19th–20th century). Originally conceived by her grandmother, an ethnographer and architect, the archive has been maintained over three generations and includes maps, drawings, watercolors, and photographs based on ethnographic materials. Bogdana Kosmina is currently digitizing these scattered sources, transforming them into a dynamic tool to understand the reconstruction of Ukrainian folk architecture under wartime conditions. The project questions how architecture arises in times of crisis, not as a planned process but as an 'emergency vernacular'—a convergence of tradition, DIY strategies, and improvisation. It focuses on collaborative reconstruction as a concrete design for a future when the present is barely comprehensible. As part of the Artists Solidarity Program Europe (ASoP), Bogdana Kosmina's residency at the Volkskundemuseum Wien allows her to explore not only the historical material but also how buildings destroyed in Ukraine are being rebuilt beyond official plans, as direct, often informal responses to the war's necessities. The project was previously presented at the Venice Architecture Biennale 2025.
