Exhibition summary

Haus der Republik is a central hub for the Wiener Festwochen's 'Freie Republik Wien' initiative, running from May to June 2024. This project aims to radically question conventional thinking and norms by creating a temporary 'Free Republic of Vienna' with its own anthem, flag, and council composed of citizens, fostering discussions on climate-friendly and solidary futures.

Curatorial context

During the crucial election year of 2024, the Wiener Festwochen presents 'Freie Republik Wien,' a radical initiative that calls for a fundamental questioning of established ways of thinking, institutional processes, and ingrained norms. This project establishes a temporary 'Free Republic of Vienna,' complete with its own anthem, flag, and a 'Council of the Republic' formed from citizens across all city districts. Over five weeks, it offers an extensive art and culture program aimed at collaboratively shaping a future vision. The Haus der Republik is envisioned as the living headquarters for this initiative. It hosts local and international activist groups, students, and the Festwochen team, creating a dynamic space for lively, controversial discussions and practical examinations of how to achieve a climate-just and solidary future. Through a series of hearings held every Tuesday and Wednesday, the Free Republic of Vienna delves into these critical questions, developing concrete rules for the future. Discussions focus on decision-making processes, project funding, inclusivity, the role of boycotts, and the challenges of sustainability for a globally operating festival. Experts, artists, and activists share insights and debate alternatives with the Council of the Republic, culminating in the presentation of the 'Wiener Erklärung'—the constitution of the Free Republic of Vienna—which will guide the next four years. This initiative is presented in collaboration with the Aktivismus Camp of the Klima Biennale Wien and the Volkskundemuseum Wien as part of the 'before it gets better...' program.
