Curatorial context

The Terrestrial Consciousness Research Station is a sculptural vehicle and experimental laboratory by Stephanie Winter & SALON HYBRID, situated in the garden of the Volkskundemuseum Wien at the Otto Wagner Areal. This project, part of the artistic exploration THE PSYCHE OF THE EARTH IS A GLOWING PUDDING, investigates the depths of terrestrial consciousness by examining the interconnected social, ecological, and political structures that shape our world. The exhibition envisions an intelligent, willful slime mass or matrix, an 'oracular projection surface,' that dreams deep within the Earth. This amorphous entity generates inquiries into planetary interconnections, encompassing political and ecological systems, inner landscapes, and cross-species entanglements. Its mutable nature shifts according to the observer and the question, raising possibilities beyond simple reality mirroring. The station itself serves as a performative tool, stage, bar, and projection surface, activated through various scenarios. Stephanie Winter, the artistic director of SALON HYBRID, works at the intersection of artistic research, performance, and installation, creating feminist ecofictions that foster collaborative practices and explore multispecies futures. Her work engages with interconnected aspects of being, sharing knowledge, and unlearning, promoting peace and embracing connections across species. Her artist book, 'THE PSYCHE OF THE EARTH IS A GLOWING PUDDING,' published in 2024, further examines these themes.
