This collection showcases Hans Makart's monumental oil sketches created for the 1879 Festival Procession celebrating the imperial couple's silver anniversary. Originally intended as decorations for the New Town Hall, these 26 surviving sketches offer a glimpse into Makart's rapid and ambitious artistic contribution to the event.
In celebration of the imperial couple's silver anniversary in 1879, the city of Vienna organized a grand Festival Procession. The artistic direction for this event was entrusted to Hans Makart, who produced a significant cycle of 35 large-format oil sketches to prepare for the monumental undertaking. These sketches played a crucial role in the public promotion of the project. Although the initial plan to use Makart's completed works as decorations within the New Town Hall did not materialize, a substantial part of this artistic legacy has been preserved. The Wien Museum collection now holds 26 of these impressive Festzugsskizzen. Each sketch vividly illustrates different guilds, trades, and thematic elements intended to be part of the procession, reflecting Makart's dynamic style and his contribution to Viennese cultural life at the time. The surviving works provide valuable insight into the scale and ambition of the historical event and Makart's creative process.
