Curatorial context

The Johann Strauss Wohnung, located at Praterstraße 54 in Vienna, preserves the legacy of Johann Strauss (son), the celebrated composer. It was in this prestigious citizen's house that Strauss composed one of the world's most famous musical pieces, 'An der schönen blauen Donau' (The Blue Danube). Having moved into the apartment on the main floor in the 1860s, Strauss, a scion of a prominent waltz dynasty, marked a period of immense career success. He began his career composing and conducting dance and march music, quickly ascending to international stardom with his own orchestra, undertaking sold-out tours across Europe and America. Later, he became a prominent figure in the success of the operetta genre, with works like 'Die Fledermaus' solidifying his reputation. The exhibition, housed within a portion of the former living quarters, delves into the composer's life and oeuvre. Visitors can expect to see documents, personal objects, and portraits of the 'Waltz King'. Significant items on display include a Bösendorfer grand piano and an Amati violin that were part of his personal collection. The space itself aims to immerse visitors in the atmosphere of Strauss's time, highlighting his contributions to Viennese culture and classical music.
