Curatorial context

The exhibition "125 Jahre 1. Mai" delves into the origins and historical observance of May Day as the international day of the working class. Following the decision at the 1889 Paris Congress of the Second International to commemorate the day in memory of a bloody strike in Chicago, the first May Day was celebrated in Vienna in 1890. Despite conservative fears, workers gathered peacefully, with over 100,000 participating in a procession in the Prater. Contemporary accounts, including Friedrich Engels's writings in the Arbeiter-Zeitung, highlight Vienna's significant and dignified celebration of this proletarian festival. The exhibition at the Waschsalon Karl-Marx-Hof specifically presented May festival pamphlets, badges, and photographs dating from 1890 to 1934, offering a visual and material history of how this day was marked in Vienna over several decades.
