The exhibition 'FRANZ SCHUHMEIER. VOLKSTRIBUN AUS OTTAKRING' delves into the life and political impact of Franz Schuhmeier, a pivotal figure in the social democratic movement in Vienna. Born in 1864, Schuhmeier's early exposure to social democracy began during his time as a factory worker. He later joined the administration of the 'Arbeiter-Zeitung' (Workers' Newspaper) in 1889 and founded the 'Apollo' smoking club, which served as a disguised workers' education association and the nascent center for the social democratic movement in Ottakring. Schuhmeier's political ascent saw him elected to the Vienna City Council in 1900 alongside Jakob Reumann, the future mayor of Vienna. He further expanded his influence by becoming a member of the Reichsrat in 1901 and the Lower Austrian State Parliament in 1910. His career was tragically cut short on the evening of February 11, 1913, when he was fatally shot by Paul Kunschak upon returning from an election rally. The exhibition showcases his life, political journey, and untimely death, positioning him as a key 'people's tribune' from the Ottakring district. The display also featured Franz Schuhmeier's death mask from the collections of the Ottakring District Museum.
