Exhibition summary

This exhibition delves into the pivotal year of 1929 in Vienna, focusing on the International Socialist Youth Meeting held on Heldenplatz and the tenth anniversary of "Red Vienna." It contrasts the festive preparations with the harsh realities of a cold winter, economic hardship, and political unrest.

Curatorial context

The year 1929 was marked by significant events in Vienna, including extensive preparations for the International Socialist Youth Meeting and the celebration of 'Red Vienna's' tenth anniversary. Despite the festive mood, the year began with extreme cold, coal shortages, rising unemployment, and continuous political crises, including frequent Heimwehr rallies and debates over a new constitution. In early July, the city buzzed with anticipation as 50,000 young people from 18 nations arrived for the youth gathering, traveling by various means including special trains. The opening of the meeting on Heldenplatz became a powerful demonstration against war and fascism, with the youth embodying a spirit of progress and hope against a backdrop of a increasingly threatening present, just eleven years after the end of World War I.
