Curatorial context

The exhibition 'Schöner Wohnen im Roten Wien' (Beautiful Living in Red Vienna) marks significant anniversaries for Viennese social housing: 100 years of the housing tax and 100 years of the housing program. Following the 1919 municipal elections where the Social Democratic Workers' Party gained an absolute majority, the city faced significant housing shortages. In response, two major housing programs were launched in 1923 and 1927, aiming to construct tens of thousands of new apartments by the early 1930s. By 1931, a tenth of Vienna's population resided in these new municipal buildings. Residents fortunate enough to secure these coveted new apartments received comprehensive guidance, often in the form of publications that instructed and advised them on domestic responsibilities. These guidelines covered various aspects of home management, including floor care and laundry practices. For instance, the municipal authorities warned against washing laundry within apartments, except for small items like handkerchiefs or socks, to prevent excessive moisture. Residents were urged to maintain the value of their assigned homes diligently. The 'new woman' was positioned as the organizer of the household and the guardian of the family, entrusted with upholding extensive hygiene and care regulations.
