Exploring 'Out of Paradise': Themes of Mythology and Psychology
"Out of Paradise" draws inspiration from Jung's seminal work, Man and His Symbols, published 60 years ago, which significantly influenced many artists. The exhibition guides visitors through a "journey of humanity," focusing on the concept of departing from a secure, 'paradise-like' state, encountering obstacles, and ultimately returning home transformed. This thematic exploration is brought to life through a rich array of pieces that reflect Jung's theories on the human psyche, the unconscious, and symbolism.
The exhibition features labyrinth-like pathways, designed to mirror life's meandering journey, presenting artworks that range from grand spiral paintings and intricate 'Joshua trees' to sculptures of serpents framing a woman's face. Visitors encounter a blend of modern and contemporary art, alongside exceptional historical works. Notable contributions include graphics by Salvador Dalí and Rembrandt, video art by Guido van der Werve, and photography by Juul Kraijer. Participating artists also include Sanne Bax, Charlotte Caspers, Nel Klaassen, Stan Klamer, Ralf Kokke, Thomas Trum, and pieces from 'outsider art' atelier Special Arts by Guus Schut, Wijnand de Vries, Anna Worrel, and Lenneke Zoeteman. Significant loans, such as Rembrandt's The Prodigal Son and Dalí's Divina Commedia, are sourced from various collections including Museum Helmantel, Art Gallery o68, and the Rijksdienst voor Cultureel Erfgoed.
The Bijbels Museum's Collaborative Vision
The Bijbels Museum describes itself as a "nomadic museum," specializing in exhibitions on themes of meaning and spirituality, which are showcased at venues across the country. "Out of Paradise" is a prime example of this collaborative approach, co-produced with Museum Krona and in partnership with Museum Klooster Ter Apel.
Museum Krona, located in Uden, is renowned for its collection of religious art housed within a partly inhabited Bridgettine abbey. Museum Klooster Ter Apel offers visitors a chance to experience medieval monastic life, alongside spaces for rotating exhibitions focusing on silence and reflection.
The exhibition was previously presented at Museum Krona in Uden from October 12, 2024, to March 16. It was also featured at Museum Klooster Ter Apel.
