Rembrandt House Museum, Amsterdam

The building that now houses the Rembrandt House Museum was originally constructed around the year 1606 in the Jodenbreestraat in Amsterdam. It forms the historic core of the current museum complex.

Around 1627, the house underwent a significant renovation, likely under the supervision of architect Jacob van Campen. During this period, an additional floor was added, and a new facade featuring a distinctive triangular pediment was installed, altering its original appearance.

On January 5, 1639, the renowned Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn acquired the house for thirteen thousand guilders. He used the property as his personal residence, a working studio, and a base for his art dealership for nearly two decades.

The Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn resided, worked, and conducted his art dealership within this house from 1639 until 1658. This period represents a significant era for the artist, during which he created many masterpieces.

After Rembrandt van Rijn declared bankruptcy, his house was put up for auction in 1658 and subsequently sold for eleven thousand guilders. In the centuries that followed, the building functioned as a private residence and underwent multiple renovations.

In 1907, on the occasion of the Rembrandt Year in 1906, the municipality of Amsterdam purchased the building, which was in poor condition. It then donated the property to the newly formed Rembrandthuis foundation, paving the way for its preservation as a museum.

Between 1907 and 1911, the historic house underwent a thorough restoration project led by architect Karel de Bazel. This extensive restoration prepared the building for its future role as a museum dedicated to Rembrandt.

The Rembrandt House Museum officially opened its doors to the public on June 10, 1911. Its establishment was initiated by the painter Jozef Israëls, aiming to preserve Rembrandt's former home. Queen Wilhelmina and Prince Hendrik were among the first visitors to the newly opened museum.

The Rembrandt House Museum is designated as a Dutch Rijksmonument, a national heritage site. This status formally recognizes its historical and architectural significance, ensuring the protection and preservation of the building for future generations.

Material-technical research conducted in 2019 confirmed that two pots, found in Rembrandt's cesspool in 1997, were indeed used by the artist. One pot contained quartz soil, a mixture Rembrandt used to prepare canvases while living in the house.

In 2021, the museum received "Shepherdess in a Landscape" from c. 1641, painted by Ferdinand Bol, one of Rembrandt's most renowned pupils. This acquisition was a significant donation to support the museum during the Covid crisis and now hangs in Rembrandt's former living room and bedroom.

The museum expanded its collection in 2022 by purchasing four contemporary works of art from Natasja Kensmil and Milan Gies. This acquisition adds to the museum's existing contemporary art holdings by various artists like Marlene Dumas.
