Eye Filmmuseum in Amsterdam Announces Restructuring to Secure its Future
Eye Filmmuseum is undertaking a significant organizational restructuring aimed at ensuring its long-term financial stability and ability to continue its mission as a national film museum. The changes come in response to increasing financial pressures, a challenge faced by many cultural institutions, due to rising costs and insufficient growth in revenue.
By spring 2025, it became clear that the museum's reserves could no longer absorb the financial strain. This prompted a thorough financial analysis and the implementation of decisive measures. A previous decision in 2022 to manage the museum's catering services in-house also did not achieve the desired results, further contributing to the financial challenges. Structural interventions and cost reductions are now deemed essential.
Despite stable visitor numbers and strong interest in its activities, a comprehensive restructuring is necessary to make Eye Filmmuseum future-proof. These measures are designed to lower operating costs, improve overall efficiency, and guarantee the continuation of its popular activities and core tasks related to film heritage.
The restructuring will unfortunately lead to some job reductions, though a significant portion of these are expected to occur through natural attrition, such as retirements or the conclusion of temporary contracts. The museum acknowledges the profound impact these changes will have on affected colleagues and teams, emphasizing that while such decisions are difficult, they are crucial for the organization's sustainability.
In implementing these changes, a social plan has been developed in cooperation with trade unions. The Works Council will provide advice on the proposed restructuring, which will then be reviewed by the Supervisory Board. Employees are scheduled to receive detailed information regarding the next steps on December 1st. Furthermore, starting December 2025, the Vermaat Groep will take over the operation of Eye's café-restaurant, with plans to enhance the synergy between film programming, exhibitions, and hospitality services.
