Eye Filmmuseum in Amsterdam Announces Strategic Restructuring for Future Sustainability
The Eye Filmmuseum in Amsterdam has announced a significant organizational restructuring aimed at ensuring its long-term financial stability and ability to continue its core mission. This strategic move comes in response to ongoing financial pressures experienced by the institution.
Addressing Financial Challenges for Long-Term Viability
For an extended period, Eye Filmmuseum has been navigating increasing financial constraints, influenced by both structural factors and specific incidents. The museum, like many cultural institutions, has faced rising operational costs while revenue growth has not kept pace. By spring 2025, it became evident that these challenges could no longer be absorbed through existing reserves.
The museum initiated a comprehensive financial analysis and began implementing initial measures. Additionally, a 2022 decision to manage its hospitality services internally did not yield the anticipated positive outcomes. To address these issues and maintain its role as a national film museum, structural interventions and cost reductions are now deemed necessary. Further details about the museum's position were outlined in a recent response from its director, Bregtje van der Haak. You can view the full statement here.
Operational Adjustments and Visitor Focus
Despite stable visitor numbers and strong interest in its diverse activities, a substantial organizational restructuring is considered vital to future-proof Eye Filmmuseum. The goal is to lower operating costs, enhance overall efficiency, and guarantee the continuation of its well-attended activities and essential functions related to film heritage.
While these adjustments are critical for the museum's future, they regrettably involve a reduction in the number of staff positions. Many of these changes are expected to occur through natural attrition, such as retirements or the conclusion of temporary contracts. The museum acknowledges the profound impact these decisions will have on affected employees and their teams, emphasizing that film culture remains central to its identity. These steps are being taken to ensure Eye remains a sustainable institution for its visitors in the years to come. A social plan has been developed in collaboration with trade unions, and the Works Council is advising on the proposed restructuring decision, which will then be reviewed by the Board of Trustees. Employees are scheduled to be informed of the next steps on December 1st.
Enhancing the Café-Restaurant Experience
As part of the operational improvements, Eye Filmmuseum is also announcing a new partnership for its hospitality services. Starting December 2025, the Vermaat Groep will take over the operation of the museum's café-restaurant. This collaboration aims to further strengthen the connection between the museum's film programming, exhibitions, and its dining experience.
Visitors to Eye Filmmuseum can look forward to continued access to its rich cinematic offerings and exhibitions, supported by these strategic changes.
