Eye Filmmuseum Amsterdam to Host Tilda Swinton Exhibition, Revealing Key Collaborations
Eye Filmmuseum in Amsterdam is set to premiere a unique exhibition titled "Tilda Swinton – Ongoing," opening on September 28, 2025. This exclusive showcase will delve into the creative world of acclaimed Scottish performer, artist, and fashion icon Tilda Swinton, focusing on her collaborative spirit and active contribution to her work. The exhibition will feature six new works developed with a roster of celebrated figures from film and art, alongside other significant pieces.
Spotlight on Creative Partnerships and New Works
The "Tilda Swinton – Ongoing" exhibition highlights the deep creative relationships that have shaped Swinton's career over four decades. Unlike traditional exhibitions that might view performers as passive subjects, this show emphasizes Swinton's role as a co-author and creative agent. She has partnered with several close friends and frequent collaborators to develop entirely new pieces for this presentation.
Among the esteemed artists and filmmakers contributing to the exhibition are Luca Guadagnino, Joanna Hogg, Jim Jarmusch, Olivier Saillard, Tim Walker, and Apichatpong Weerasethakul. These collaborations will result in six new works, specifically commissioned for the Eye Filmmuseum, exploring themes such as nature, memory, ancestry, and the essence of artistic creation itself. Additionally, the exhibition will present existing work made with Pedro Almodóvar and previously unseen material from the archive of the late Derek Jarman.
One segment will feature five works created with filmmakers Pedro Almodóvar, Luca Guadagnino, Joanna Hogg, Jim Jarmusch, and Apichatpong Weerasethakul. Another unique element includes a performance and installation developed with fashion historian and curator Olivier Saillard, drawing from Swinton’s personal archives. Photographer Tim Walker will also contribute a piece exploring Swinton’s origins.
Exploring the Legacy of Derek Jarman
A significant part of "Tilda Swinton – Ongoing" will pay homage to the legacy of filmmaker Derek Jarman, a pivotal figure in Swinton's early career. The exhibition will present never-before-seen archival material from Jarman’s 8mm film collection, offering a rare glimpse into their shared artistic journey and his profound influence.
The exhibition is scheduled to run from September 28, 2025, until February 8, 2026, at Eye Filmmuseum, located at IJpromenade 1 in Amsterdam. It will be complemented by an extensive program of films and talks, providing deeper context and further insights into Swinton's remarkable career and her collaborative approach to art. Further details on the exhibition and its collaborators are available from the official announcement.
