Heineken Experience: Brewery Heritage in Amsterdam

The industrial facility that now houses the Heineken Experience was constructed in 1867, serving as the company's first primary brewing facility for over a century.

The original brewery facility stopped functioning as Heineken's primary brewing site in 1988. This change occurred when a new, more modern, and larger facility was constructed on the city's outskirts.

In 1991, the former brewery building was opened to the public as a visitor centre, initially known as the 'Heineken Treat and Information Centre'. This marked its transformation into a public attraction.

By 2001, the visitor centre, which had grown into one of Amsterdam's most popular tourist attractions, officially changed its name to the 'Heineken Experience'.

BRC Imagination Arts, an experience design firm led by Bob Rogers, was commissioned to design the extensive remodeling for the visitor center. Their aim was to reconnect visitors with beer-making and Heineken's history.

After a year of extensive remodeling and expansion, the Heineken Experience officially reopened to visitors on 3 November 2008. This transformation introduced four levels of historical artifacts, product exploration, and interactive multimedia exhibits.

The museum underwent a 14-month renovation and expansion process from 2021 to the end of November 2022. This work included renovating the façade and entrance, as well as expanding the Reception Center to better manage visitor queues.

The original brewing facility that houses the Heineken Experience is recognized as an Anchor Point on the European Route of Industrial Heritage (ERIH). This designation underscores its historical significance as an industrial landmark.
