Museum van de Geest | Dolhuys in Haarlem Celebrates 20 Years with New "Tijdreizen" Exhibition
The Museum van de Geest | Dolhuys in Haarlem is preparing for its 20th anniversary next year, marking the occasion with a special exhibition titled "Tijdreizen" (Time Travel). Beginning July 3, 2024, visitors can explore a unique collection of historical images of the monumental Dolhuys building, some never before publicly displayed.
Curator Tom Theeuwen delved into the museum's extensive archives to uncover these rare photographs. The historic Dolhuys, which houses the museum, boasts over 700 years of history dedicated to care, making these images a significant visual record of its evolution through the centuries.
Exploring Centuries of Care History
The "Tijdreizen" exhibition is showcased in the Zorgzaal of the Museum van de Geest. It provides an immersive journey through the building's past, presenting its various roles from a historic Dolhuys to a city and poor people's hospital, and even a children's home. Alongside the newly revealed images, the exhibition features stories from former residents and staff, complemented by objects from the museum's heritage collection.
Engaging Activities for All Ages
To enhance the visitor experience, the museum is offering several engaging activities. Free guided tours will be available every Sunday afternoon, starting July 7, 2024, between 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM. Young visitors can embark on a historical scavenger hunt designed for exploring the museum and its surroundings.
The museum is also inviting the public to participate in a photo contest. Individuals can submit their favorite photographs of the museum and its grounds by December 31, 2024. The winning entry will be added to the museum's permanent collection and featured in an exhibition during the anniversary year. Curator Tom Theeuwen will lead the expert jury in evaluating submissions. "It is an honor to highlight such a rich history," says Theeuwen, adding, "With the photo contest, we hope to actively involve the community in this celebration and showcase their unique perspective on our special heritage."
