Museum van de Geest | Dolhuys Launches Mindfulness Program for Well-being in Amsterdam
Museum van de Geest, known for its focus on mental health and the human mind, has introduced a new initiative: 'Mindfulness in the Museum'. This program combines the calming practice of mindfulness with the reflective power of art to foster improved mental and physical well-being. Collaborating with high-grade mindfulness trainer Jolien Posthumus, the museum aims to encourage a more mindful approach to understanding one's own mind and the minds of others.
The new program, which commenced in February 2022, offers two distinct pathways. One is tailored as 'Mindfulness for healthcare professionals,' addressing a growing need for stress reduction and enhanced care quality within the medical community. The second is a public program called 'A mindful break,' designed for general visitors seeking a moment of reflection and mental restoration.
Jolien Posthumus, a program maker specializing in the intersection of art, culture, well-being, and inclusion, developed the specific curriculum for Museum van de Geest. Participants are invited to engage with art in a way that promotes open-mindedness, self-reflection, and expression, offering a valuable outlet for mental processing.
Enhancing Well-being Through Art and Mindfulness
Research indicates that both mindfulness practices and engagement with art contribute positively to personal well-being. According to Barbara Doeleman-van Veldhoven, founder of BFC Compassionate Care & Mindful Medicine, mindfulness cultivates a conscious and compassionate presence, which is beneficial for healthcare professionals, patient safety, and overall patient experience. Furthermore, studies suggest that doctors who regularly engage with art are often perceived as more empathetic and interested by their patients. The museum provides a unique setting to cultivate these qualities.
The 'Mindfulness in the Museum' program aligns with the broader cultural initiatives of Museum van de Geest, which are dedicated to openly discussing mental health and contributing to the prevention of mental challenges. By integrating these practices, the museum seeks to offer tangible support and a space for mental health awareness.
Session Details and Upcoming Symposium
For healthcare professionals, sessions are scheduled every Thursday morning from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. The public 'Mindfulness break' sessions are held on Thursday afternoons, from 1:30 PM to 2:15 PM. Further information regarding these sessions and how to participate is available directly on the museum's website.
Looking ahead, Museum van de Geest is also co-hosting a symposium titled 'Mindfulness in the Museum' on Monday, November 14, 2022. The event will feature keynote speaker Louise Thompson, Health and Wellbeing Manager from the Manchester Art Gallery, among others. Details for this symposium will be announced via the museum's official channels.
