This presentation marks the second Masterpiece exhibition since the museum's royal reopening in 2020, following a previous showcase featuring Marlene Dumas. Exploring the Monumental 'Epic of the Mind'
Central to the exhibition is the newly created monumental tapestry, "Epic of the Mind." Spanning an impressive 38.5 meters in width and 3 meters in height, this textile artwork serves as a tribute to the human mind’s vast imagination and its inherent fragility. The piece integrates documents and objects from the Museum van de Geest's historical collection, drawing viewers into a narrative journey reminiscent of a modern Bayeux tapestry. The artwork unfolds across abstract landscapes, depicting a dream-like exploration of the mind that transitions between serene, dramatic, and ecstatic scenes. The tapestry is displayed in sections of 6 meters, allowing for an intimate viewing experience of its intricate details. This unique textile creation was developed in collaboration with master weaver Stef Miero from TextielLab, the knowledge institute of the Textielmuseum in Tilburg.
A Multifaceted Look at the Human Psyche
Beyond the central tapestry, "Epic of the Mind" features other notable works by Aëgerter that explore the intersection of mental health and art. Visitors can experience "Photographic Treatment," an art project informed by scientific research conducted by Aëgerter alongside Dutch experts in neurology, geriatrics, and psychology. Also on display is the video installation "LEVIATHAN," offering a reflection on the historical and controversial use of isolation cells. Additionally, the museum’s historic walled front garden presents a blend of photography and medicinal plants, further connecting art with themes of healing and the mind.
