Amsterdam's NEMO Science Museum Opens Highest Public Rooftop Square
NEMO Science Museum in Amsterdam has officially opened its newly redeveloped rooftop square to the public, marking the inauguration of the Netherlands' highest publicly accessible rooftop space. This innovative addition offers visitors a unique perspective on the city alongside interactive scientific exploration. The square was officially opened by Amsterdam's Mayor Femke Halsema on May 22, with public access beginning May 23.
This new outdoor space, which is free to enter, is designed as a green oasis dedicated to science and technology in the heart of Amsterdam. It provides a unique setting where both adults and children can engage with scientific principles through hands-on activities, such as measuring wind speed or observing celestial bodies. The rooftop also features an open-air stage, intended to host various events, including film screenings and musical performances.
Exploring Science and Nature High Above the City
The design of NEMO's rooftop square focuses on sustainability and biodiversity. Visitors can explore how green spaces contribute to a healthier urban environment and observe the more than 75 species of flowers and plants carefully integrated into this artificial landscape. Although currently young, these plants are expected to grow into a vibrant natural ecosystem.
Beyond the plant life, the rooftop encourages interaction with natural phenomena. Guests can investigate cloud formations, study the sun and stars, and even get a closer look at the local bird population. The managing director of NEMO Science Museum highlighted the vision for the rooftop as a creative and welcoming place where people can connect, understand science and technology, and enjoy impressive views of Amsterdam.
Special Events and Amsterdam's 750th Anniversary
To celebrate both its opening and Amsterdam's 750th anniversary, NEMO Science Museum will host the NEMO Roof Festival from June 12 to 21. This special program includes a variety of events, such as a morning rave, a rooftop safari, live music performances, vegan tasting sessions, and theatre shows. Further details about the festival program are available on the museum's website.
The redevelopment of the rooftop square was made possible through contributions from various partners, underscoring a commitment to creating an accessible and educational public space within the city.
