NEMO Science Museum in Amsterdam is reflecting on a successful 2025, having welcomed approximately 640,000 visitors throughout the year. The museum continues its mission to connect audiences with science, technology, and society through engaging experiences. Looking ahead, NEMO is planning expanded programming and extended hours for 2026, offering new ways for both children and adults to explore scientific concepts.
High Visitor Engagement and a New Green Space in 2025
The past year saw a significant number of visitors to NEMO, with an estimated 640,000 people engaging with its interactive exhibits. Visitor feedback consistently rated the museum highly, often citing the welcoming staff, diverse offerings, and the iconic Chain Reaction demonstration as particular highlights. Over 300,000 additional guests also enjoyed the museum's newly renovated roof terrace.
A notable development in 2025 was the grand opening of the new roof terrace on May 22, officiated by Amsterdam's Mayor Femke Halsema. This sustainable green space was presented as a gift to the city in celebration of its 750th anniversary. The terrace provides a unique panoramic view of Amsterdam and is freely accessible to the public, functioning as an outdoor venue for various activities, including films, music, theater, and educational events during the summer months.
Anticipating 2026: Expanded Hours and Adult Evening Programs
NEMO Science Museum is preparing for an eventful 2026, with plans to broaden its offerings and reach an even wider audience. Director Géke Roelink emphasized a focus on "playing and learning through play" for the new year. This includes extending opening hours to create more opportunities for experiencing science and technology in innovative ways.
A significant new initiative for 2026 involves a series of evening programs designed specifically for adults. These events will delve into contemporary themes in science and technology from various perspectives, often in collaboration with external partners. Visitors can anticipate a diverse schedule of activities, from small exhibitions and performances to films, science quizzes, music, and lectures. Initial programs are slated for February, March, and April, featuring events such as a theatre performance about NASA astronaut Judy Resnik on February 12, an inspiration evening with New Scientist on March 26, and a dedicated evening on mental resilience on April 9.
