Curatorial context

Eye Filmmuseum hosts the first major exhibition in the Netherlands dedicated to the work of Catalan film and theatre director Albert Serra. Titled 'Albert Serra – Liberté', the exhibition transforms the entire space into an immersive stage, orchestrating clandestine encounters where theatre, cinema, and art converge. Visitors are invited into a bewildering total experience that blends theatrical and cinematic elements, reminiscent of the vibrant landscapes of rococo painters like Jean-Honoré Fragonard and François Boucher, combined with a contemporary atmosphere. Serra engages participants in a captivating game of observation and participation, exploring the essence of 'ultimate freedom'. This exhibition marks a new phase in Serra's reinterpretation of his play "Liberté." It portrays French aristocrats fleeing a conservative court to meet Prussian allies in a forest clearing, exchanging libertine notions of freedom inspired by the Marquis de Sade. As the narrative unfolds, these freethinkers pursue intimate connections that blur societal norms and physical limitations in a captivating dance of revelation and secrecy. The exhibition also features content advisories for explicit material, including warnings for sex, strong language, and viewer discretion for those 16 and older.
