Exhibition summary

Deep seeing currents is a multisensory installation by internationally renowned artist Olafur Eliasson, specifically developed for the monumental rotunda of the newly renovated ARTIS Aquarium. The work invites visitors to experience the profound and hidden depths of the deep sea through immersive light, sound, and physical vibrations.

Curatorial context

In the installation 'Deep seeing currents', Olafur Eliasson creates an immersive experience that envelopes visitors in the darkness and ambient sounds of the underwater world. By utilizing oceanic sounds—such as whale songs, the rumbling of hydrothermal vents, and man-made underwater noise—the work allows visitors to feel the pressure and vastness of the deep sea through physical vibrations. Flashing lights descend throughout the space, mimicking the hypnotic movement of marine snow, while the artist encourages visitors to unlock their senses to perceive an environment that remains otherwise unimaginable to most humans. The installation serves as a connection point between art, science, and nature, highlighting the critical role the deep sea plays in regulating Earth's climate and supporting global ecosystems. By situating this work within the historic 1882 ARTIS Aquarium, the museum continues its mission to tell the story of the relationship between humanity, water, and the natural world. This site-specific installation was developed in collaboration with the museum and is supported by the Mondriaan Fund.

Admission and ticket notes

The installation is located within the ARTIS Aquarium and is accessible as part of a general visit to the ARTIS-Park. Visitors are encouraged to check the official website for ticket prices and visiting hours before planning their trip to the park.
