Curatorial context

Opened in 1882, the ARTIS Aquarium was immediately hailed as a "world wonder," becoming the largest and most modern aquarium in Europe at the time. Constructed on 1,740 wooden piles, it could hold over a million liters of water. The aquarium's design, by Amsterdam architect Gerlof Salm and his son, features unique eclecticism and classicist temple architecture, drawing parallels to the Concertgebouw. Its construction began in 1879 and required extensive foundation work to support the immense weight of the water and an innovative filtration system. The establishment of the Aquarium was a pivotal moment for ARTIS and the city of Amsterdam. In 1877, the municipality granted the land for its construction on the condition that ARTIS, previously exclusive, would open its doors to everyone. The Aquarium's inauguration in 1882 marked a significant step towards broader public access, allowing city dwellers and visitors alike to experience the zoo. The Lloyd's waterfiltersystem used in the ARTIS-Aquarium is noted as the last working example of its kind globally.
