The English artist and filmmaker Ben Rivers was honored with the second Eye Art & Film Prize in 2016. Rivers' work operates at the confluence of documentary and fiction, frequently portraying individuals who have detached themselves from societal norms. Using raw film material, he crafts subtle narratives about alternative ways of existence on the margins of society. His significant oeuvre is recognized for its exceptional contribution to the evolving landscape between visual arts and film. Born in Somerset, UK, in 1972, Rivers studied Fine Art and initially worked with sculpture before turning to photography and film. He taught himself to shoot on 16mm and develop film manually. His solo exhibitions include 'The Two Eyes Are Not Brothers' (2016) at Whitworth Museum and the Marrakech Biennale, and 'Earth Needs More Magicians' (2015) at Camden Arts Centre. Rivers was also an Artist-in-focus at various festivals and co-founded Brighton Cinematheque. His awards include the Tiger Award for Best Short Film at IFFR 2015 and the FIPRESCI International Critics Prize at the Venice Film Festival 2011 for 'Two Years At Sea'. He currently lives and works in London.
